A Critical Analysis of Aristotles Theory of Causation - Literature Essay Samples

The theory that the philosopher Aristotle put forward regarding causation is one of his most well-known and influential. In fact, his ideas have dominated perceptions on this issue throughout most of western philosophy since his work appeared approximately 2,300 years ago. His theory centers around the idea of what causes things to be, and of how many different kind of causes there are; for Aristotle, it was necessary to attempt to investigate the phenomena that we experience in our world. His theory is also known as â€Å"the doctrine of four causes.† These four causes are usually labelled as â€Å"material,† â€Å"efficient,† â€Å"formal,† and â€Å"final.† I will be looking in depth at these four causes separately, and will also critically examine the specific strengths of Aristotles theory and the broader issues surrounding it. Aristotles theory of the â€Å"material cause† is accepted as one of the primary accounts of causation. If we accept that everything in our world is material, then we must look at what these materialities are made of. For example, a knife is made out of steel, or a box is made out of cardboard. He also attempts to use the material cause as an example of the properties of the object; knives are strong because they are made of steel etc. Aristotle believed that material cause had two elements, the prime matter and the proximate matter. The proximate matter is matter that is made up of things with properties. For example, Aristotle would say that if a computer is made up of cells and electricity, then those cells and electricty have a proximate matter. Prime matter, on the other hand, is described as a necessity, but Aristotle is not sure that it exists. He after all believed (like many Greeks of this time) that the elements made up everything we can empirically acknowledge. Prim e matter is matter of the elements, which Aristotle describes as â€Å"pure potentiality.† Such prime matter is capable of existing in any form, and exists externally and in everything. Plato had put forward a similar idea, as described in his â€Å"Timaeus†; there must be another external â€Å"thing† that does not fall into Platos belief about forms, much less his idea about what drives them. Plato thus argues that there must be â€Å"a receptacle of all coming to be.† However, he refers to this element of the universe as â€Å"space† rather than as â€Å"matter.† Aristotles and Plato’s theories on â€Å"prime matter† have been criticised by Daniel W. Graham, who claims that such thinking entails a paradox. William Charlton also argues against the concept of prime matter, basing his criticism on matters of ambiguous classification. As he writes, â€Å"is the difference of saying nothing remains, or the difference of saying prime matter remains, purely one of words?† Both modern scholars argue that there may not be anything left to remain, but that prime matter is not necessarily produced as a result. Ultimately, they argue that there is no way to tell if the property Aristotle cites does or does not exist; therefore, all this is a â€Å"non-argument. However, Charlton does point out that there are problematic issues behind the â€Å"metaphysicality† of Aristotle’s thoughts. Aristotle’s next theory of causation is the idea of â€Å"efficiency.† An efficient cause is the concept of â€Å"what causes it to be.† For example, if we were to look at a knife, the knife was made by we humans because we needed to cut things. That factor would effectively be the efficient cause of a knife. Such a cause can also be linked to internal motion or motivation. The internal motion of living things would be growth or â€Å"the soul.† Adapting Greek philosophy to Christian thought, St. Aquinas used Aristotle’s theory of efficiency in 3 of his 5 proofs of the existence of God. Aquinas explains that we can see that everything we observe is the product of an efficient cause; therefore, there must have been a starting point, in order to avoid infinite regression. He then makes the assumption that this â€Å"uncaused causer† is God. Yet a criticism of this construct is that if we can foresee an infinite future, then it is not entirely o ut of the realms of possibility for there to be an infinite past also. There is also the question of whether God is potentially an infinite regress, since by the logic of causation there will always have to be something that caused the uncaused. If we are to accept that there is an uncaused causer, then why should we assume that this causer is God, or has the characteristics of the Judeo-Christian God? Aristotle’s third theory of causation is the â€Å"Formal† theory. Here, he argues that not only is everything made up of matter, but everything also has a form. The form of a perceivable object is what defines and separates it from something with the same matter. For example, a table and a pencil may both be made out of wood, but their â€Å"forms† make them very different objects. The material cause is described as the â€Å"potentiality,† whereas the formal cause is the â€Å"actuality.† The idea of form is also applied to living creatures. Aristotle described the theory of forms as a â€Å"difficult and controversial† topic. The idea is very closely associated with Plato’s â€Å"world of forms,† but is perhaps a slightly more refined version, as Aristotle has taken into account thinkers before him, yet manages to show how his ideas are different with the four causes. Aristotle’s theory is also visible in the material world, as opposed to Plato’s theory, which hinges on the presence of an undetectable world. The idea of form has been criticised,however, as it doesn’t take into account the constant flux of objects and the material world. We wouldn’t be able to take into account all the possibilities of the forms of an object. While something may have the form of a table, it could also be used as a chair, or a murder weapon. A counter-argument to this objection is the idea of a blunt knife. Although the efficient cause has been compromised, that doesn’t affect the formal cause; it’s not that the knife is no longer a knife, but is now instead just a â€Å"bad knife. This criticism could come under ethical fire, however, if we take into account Aristotles belief regarding our own telos, which is to reason. If a human is unable to reason due to mental disabilities, or differing beliefs concerning our telos, does that make that human a bad human? The fourth and concluding cause is the â€Å"final† cause. The final cause is explained by Aristotle as the end for which things are in motion. This is also described as the end purpose or the telos. The final cause is not external to the subject, but is an intrinsic part of its nature. For a seed, the final cause may be to grow into a plant. For a knife, the final cause may be to cut a watermelon in half. Aristotle believed that the final cause for humans, and what separates us from other animals, is our ability to reason, and to seek happiness (which can only be achieved through our ability to reason). Yet it is debatable whether Aristotle is correct that humans are the only creatures with the capacity to reason. For example, there is a famous photograph of an ape using a stick to measure the depth of water in a stream in order to determine whether or not the stream can be crossed. Such examples render debatable the question of Aristotle actually means by reason. Another cri ticism would be indebted to the naturalist Darwin, who would argue against the idea of having a â€Å"telos† in the first place. It is somewhat unclear why Aristotle, who is described as an empiricist, would subscribe to the idea of a telos, as there is no empirical evidence of a purpose for humans outside of whatever purpose we create for ourselves. Yet Aristotle believes that we cannot describe anything in its entirety unless we mention its telos. It would be virtually impossible to fully describe a knife without mentioning its ability to cut; therefore, Aristotle’s interest in our telos comes from his drive to fully understand the cause of our existence. Aristotle claims that our telos is to find happiness, yet he argues that the only way to achieve happiness is through the use of reason. Reason will provide us with happiness if we focus solely on attempting to understand ourselves, rather than give into the pleasures of the body, which are seen as â€Å"less thanà ¢â‚¬  by Aristotle. A hedonist may disagree with this view of the world, and may argue that happiness comes from indulging in pleasure, not from abstaining from it. Aristotle provides us with a simple way of defining where things come from, and why they are here. He fails, however, in appreciating the complexity of circumstances and of exceptional cases, and brands them as â€Å"false.† This choice results in an argument that contains many faults. Aristotles ideas also rely on experience, yet as Plato had previously explained, our experience and our perception of the world are untrustworthy; therefore, any argument based on them should regarded with suspicion.

Abraham Lincolns quotations have become a part of American life, and for good reason. Though the slave states had been seceding from the Union, Lincoln expressed a wish that the  Civil War would not begin. Lincoln was referring to the imminent job of putting the Union back together after years of very bloody and costly warfare. 4. It is not best to swap horses while crossing the river. The comment is actually based on a joke of the time, about a man crossing a river whose horse is sinking and is offered a better horse but says it isnt the time to be changing horses. The comment attributed to Lincoln has been used many times since in political campaigns. 5. If McClellan is not using the army, I should like to borrow it for a while. Source: Lincoln made this comment on April 9, 1862 to express his frustration with General George B. McClellan, who was commanding the Army of the Potomac and was always very slow to attack. 6. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could do it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that. Without losing sight of goals, my beliefs of teaching and learning are very specific. First, I believe every child deserves to receive an education. No matter their race or income, every child deserves to learn. The are innocent beings, and these children are going to be our future someday. More specifically, the philosophy that I would teach to my students would be Cultural Nationalism. â€Å"The cultural nationalist teacher focuses exclusively on the experience of the oppressed group as the center or pivot of the curriculum† (Asante, p. 4). I want to use what is going on in the world and focus on their cultural experience. This allows children from oppressed groups to feel nurtured in their school environment day by day. Another philosophy that I have is, I believe a teacher should make learning fun for his/her students. When children are having fun at school, It makes them want to come back and keep coming back. Regular curriculum can get pretty boring. Making the curriculum fun engages the students into learning, and helps them understand it better. Also, I believe in staying involved with professional development so we can continuously learn new things. It is important to me to keep using updated technology   in classrooms. â€Å"Matthew Arnold warned that faith in machinery was humankind’s greatest menace† (Postman, p. 36). I do not believe in what  Arnold stated. I think that new technology in the classrooms is constantly helping teachers and the whole education process. Next, I believe in striving to have positive relationships with students and parents. It is very important to have somewhat of a personal relationship with your students and their parents. It really shows that you care as a teacher. Developing positive relationships with your students allows you to understand them more. This allows you to figure out the best way to teach each and everyone of your students. There are times when we encounter students that require a little more effort than others. When we are faced with this type of situation teacher must reflect on the true meaning of teaching. This will enable the teacher to embrace the difference in the learning styles of students and allow the teacher to develop innovative strategies for reaching such a diverse population. Teachers should give all students the chance to let their creative juices flow. With a little nudge and some encouragement there is no end to what a student can do. Teachers must realize that the impact that we have on our students last a lifetime. I can always remember being told knowledge is power. This statement has been true for decades and surely will be true in the future.

Bubonic plague is commonly spread through fleas that have made a meal from an infected Rattus rattus. The most dangerous type of plague is pneumonic. It can be spread through aerosol droplets released through coughs, sneezes, or through fluid contact. It may also become a secondary result of a case of untreated bubonic or septicemic plague. Although not as common as the bubonic strain, it is more deadly. It has an untreated mortality rate on nearly 100%, as compared to 50% untreated mortality for bubonic plague. It attacks the respiratory track, furthering the cycle. The third type of plague is septemic. It is spread by direct bodily fluid contact. It may also develop as a secondary result of untreated bubonic or pneumonic plague. A LITTLE HISTORY As mentioned before, the most known incidence of bubonic plague was in 14th century Europe. In 1346 reports of a terrible pestilence in China, spreading through Mesopotamia and Asia Minor had reached Europe, but caused no concern until two years later. In January of 1348 the plague had reached Marseille in France and Tunis in Africa. By the end of the next year the plague had reached as far as Norway, Scotland, Prussia, Iceland, and Italy. In 1351 the infection had spread to include Russia. The plague was an equal opportunity killer. In Avignon nine bishops were killed, King Alfonso XI of Castile succumbed, and peasants died wherever they lay. Though the plague had, for the most part, ceased less than ten years after it started, it killed nearly one third of the European population. In many towns the dead outnumbered the living. Training and development of new skills and knowledge are a collegial experience where teachers can share a common language, implement together, and coach one another (as cited by Gregory 2008, p. 6-7, according to Collins, 1998): All members of a college staff are required to have 12 hours of faculty training yearly and 12 hours of professional training. as posted by Everhart, 2013) However, as in any learning situatation awareness is a key component of increasing the mission of the institute as to meet the needs of the holistic community. In as much the following could be a consideration for implementation: 1. Teachers talk regularly about teaching and learning (As cited by Gregory, 2008, p. 6-7 according to Collins, 1998): a. Expansion of aforementioned application as cited by Everhart to increase communication as related to teaching and learning includes the preparedness of the team. Preparedness includes active communication and listening at i. Building level: faculty meetings/workshops, inter-departmental meetings, grade-level or subject area meetings, integrated regular-special education meetings, curriculum meetings, or team teaching and planning session ii. State-District level; faculty meeting, workshops, and development training session which focus on research, theory, problem-solving activities and/or implementation of standards 2. (Gregory, 2008, p. 3) On the other hand, implementing professional learning and expansion of skills does not require a teacher, department, team, or institute to be all things to every situation at all times. Rather, it calls on teachers, departments, the team, and the institute to be consistently mindful of structured meaning and authenticity of skills, communication, and collaboration, individuals and the group, supportive of practice and research on pedagogy. It is my personal belief that if implemented correctly with a manner of respect for all involved the ease of implementation will appear effortless. However, as noted in any given situation there are those engaged in the art of teaching who cannot see beyond the scope of their own beliefs therefore will attempt to create a diversion or disruption. The key, however, based on opinion, is to acknowledge the change as a whole, to recognize individual needs, while providing a rich, stimulating approach to create a productive learning environment.

As higher education evolves in unexpected ways, this new landscape demands innovation and flexibility from the institutions that serve the nation’s learners. The recommendations mentioned include assess, cost and affordability, financial aid, learning, transparency and accountability, and finally innovation. One of the most significant recommendations that needs to definitely be address is the issue of cost and affordability of higher education. The way higher education is being financed is becoming increasingly dysfunctional. State appropriations are declining; educational cost is rising; and cost per student is increasing faster than inflation or family income. Affordability is directly affected by a financing system that provides limited incentives for colleges and universities to take aggressive steps to improve institutional efficiency and productivity. Public worry about increasing expenses might eventually add to the disintegration of open trust in higher education. Only through reform can confidence in higher education in America be renewed.
